Lavern "Barry" Charles (1984-2004) | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Lavern "Barry" Charles died January 21, 2004, after rendering assistance to a man, in New Orleans, La. Upon rendering assistance to the man, another man fired a rifle which fatally killed Charles. Barry was 20 years old, and was attending Nicholls State University in New Orleans. Charles was a former graduate of Christian Life Academy. Upon receiving word back in Kingsville, Texas of the tragic death of Charles, current players of the CLA Knights basketball team decided to retire the basketball Jersy of Charles. The jersey, which is framed, and has Barry's jersey number and his name on it, currently hangs in the gym at Christain Life Academy. A ceremony was held for Barry on February 17,2004 at the C.L.A. Gym. Friends spoke about Barry's life. Coach Jesse Gutierrez stated that "even though he wasn't perfect, he was always number 1 to the students and staff of Christian Life Academy". Pastor Edwin Cann ended the ceremony by saying,"Even though we are mourning the loss of a beloved student, we should remember that Barry is rejoicing in Heaven before Christ, and singing with the angels, and that he is in a much better place now." | Barry was a 2000 graduate of Christian Life Academy. He was also named an All-Star Winner in basketball and flag football by the Texas Christian Athletic League (T*CAL). | |||||||||||||||||||||
